Jamesae, Before Jesus Christ came to earth to die on the cross...

Jamesae,

Before Jesus Christ came to earth to die on the cross in our place so that we could be saved, the ten commandments and hundreds of other "laws" were the standards by which people tried (unsuccessfully) to live to try to please God. Keeping the sabbath (the seventh day of the week or Saturday was required as one of the ten commandments.

One could be punished with death if he blasphemed the sabbath by working and not worshiping.

When Jesus came, he eliminated the necessity for all of those laws and our accepting His death, burial, and resurrection freed us from trying to do things like that to escape hell. However, he restated nine of the ten commandments as things that we really ought to do. The only one that he did not bless is "keeping the sabbath."

Since salvation is a new beginning, early Christians decided to worship on the first day (the beginning) of the week which is Sunday.

God wants us to assemble ourselves together in worship, but He does not require that we do that on Saturday.
