Haitian Church Dress Code

Woodring Saint Preux - November 15 2009, 2:27 PM

Do you believe that there is a silent dress code in the Haitian churches or is it simply that Haitian church goers love to dress like they are going to a gala event?

Don't get me wrong, I've been going to church since I was two years old and I know that I have to save my best clothes, for church, funerals, and weddings.

I did it for so long that I started to believe that going to church in style is the only way to do it.

Praise the lord BUT...

do it in style...

Well...

Let me tell you what happened to me today and you will understand why I raised this question:

I am in Spring Valley, New York for the rest of the month; I came to spend the thanksgiving holiday with my family.

I travel light, I did not plan to go to any events so I decided to leave all my suits, and fancy shoes back in Florida.

This Sunday morning, I woke up with the intention to go to church with my mother...

The lady loves it when I accompany her to church but today, the first thing that came to my mind was:

Woody, How in gods name are you going to church today when all you have with you is a pair of boots, jeans, and regular t-shirt?

Then I remember a friend of mine in Miami who tells me, man you have to come to my church, you can wear whatever you want and nobody cares.

"A Haitian church?" I asked...

"Epa-w pedi tet ou...

Of course not..." He replied!

Not to bash the brothers and sister I used to go to church with but the NUMBER ONE complaint I hear in the Haitian church is the nosy people who constantly gossip about...

"Hey, pitit...

Ou pa we ki rad se entel mete sou li pitit?"

The other one is that the service is just too long...

but that's another topic.

So...

Today's question is:

Can I wear my boots, a pair of jeans, and a white t-shirt to go and praise the lord in ANY Haitian church?
